The first chief executive of the new Dorset unitary authority is set to be named as the boss of three of the county’s district and borough councils.

Having held the interim top position on the shadow Dorset council, Matt Prosser (pictured right) has been recommended as the first holder of the new council’s chief executive role by its shadow senior appointments committee.

The move now only requires the approval of the full shadow council at its meeting later this month before being made official.

Work to appoint a chief executive, with a salary of about £175,000, for the new council began in June with independent advisors appointed by the shadow council to help with the process.

Following a series of interviews over the summer, the shadow senior appointments committee has recommended that the chief executive of the Dorset Councils Partnership of North Dorset, West Dorset and Weymouth and Portland councils be given the position.

Speaking after the committee’s meeting on Thursday, its chairman, Cllr Spencer Flower, said: “We are delighted to recommend Matt as the chief executive of the new council.

“This has been a tough process for all involved, but we are certain this decision is the right one and that Matt will continue to deliver this programme of change, which is the most exciting opportunity for local government in Dorset for over 40 years”.

The appointment to the top role on the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole unitary authority is expected to be made next month.

The two new councils will come into force from April 1 next year with the existing nine councils being abolished along with six chief executive roles.
