Thousands of athletes compete in what's known as the ultimate 1 day test of endurance.

The UK's biggest triathlon is getting underway in Weymouth this morning.

IRONMAN SEVENTY POINT THREE has already sold out and will see thousands of athletes compete in what's known as the ultimate one day test of endurance.

Organisers have told Wessex FM they've been keeping a close eye on the weather with wind and heavy rain forecast for first thing.

Race Director, Alan Rose says they're ready whatever the conditions,

"I think everytime we have a race things like the weather always plays a factor. It can be too hot, too cold, too wet or too windy".

"This is no different to anything else. We take every part of the event seriously and we look at how we make sure we can keep athletes safe, building contingency plans and we have an amazing team on the ground doing some great work."

Athletes will take on the 1.2 mile swim in Weymouth Bay followed by a 56 mile bike from the coast and into the Dorset countryside before finishing with the 13.1 mile run along Weymouth’s esplanade where thousands of supporters will cheer them onto the finish.

The event brings a festive atmosphere and gives supporters the chance to see some of Britain’s best professional athletes live including the thousands of amateur hopefuls who have set themselves the goal of completing one of the most popular IRONMAN 70.3 races in the UK.

Alan Rose admits whatever the conditions, those taking part deserve our support,

"We've got a whole range of people aged from 18 through to 80 who are really really embracing the event. We are going to have people finishing in 4 hours, some after 8 and a half and all of them are very valued people".

IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth offers 50 qualifying slots for the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France.
