Dorset businesses urged to join the fight against plastic.

There are calls for businesses across South and West Dorset to join the fight against single use plastic.

Dorset's Litter Free Coast and Sea team have teamed up with Dorset Food and Drink along with the Arts Development Company to tackle the problem.

There are fears things like water bottles, bags, straws and coffee cups will just end up in the sea.

Caroline Richards is one of the team members raising awareness.

"When I come to work I make my lunch and it's in an old plastic container which I have used for years. I am not using cling film. I am also carrying my reusable water bottle which is filled up so I am not bringing plastic bottles to work. I also bring my own cup".

"We are finding that a lot of the businesses are so busy that they just don't have time to think about this sort of stuff. We are going to go in and give them help and advice. We do not pretend to be experts but we do have some great contacts so we are going to help get them some more sustainable, greener cups, plates and crockery."

Litter Free Coast and Sea have now taken this one step further by creating a resources page on their website - www.litterfreecoastandsea.co.uk/plastics-surgery

The page consists of tips, case studies and a breakdown of all the options facing businesses when it comes to packaging solutions, following the guidelines of the Waste Hierarchy - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle/Compost, Recover energy, Disposal.

Dorset has some of the best beaches and bathing waters in the country. Much of the litter that found on our beaches is single use food and drinks packaging.

Single-use plastics, or disposable plastics can cause the biggest issue to the marine environment because plastics never degrade, they eventually become micro plastics which then can be ingested and enter the food chain.

Matilda Manley, Project Co-ordinator for Litter Free Coast and Sea said,

'When it comes to packaging, it can be a bit of a minefield and can be very confusing to determine which type is best for your business, as well as the environment.

The best option on paper might not be in practice if the packaging cannot be collected and processed as it was designed to be. We don't pretend to be experts, but we have lots of information and hope that the webpage we have put together is useful for local businesses who might be daunted or confused about the best option for them.'
