Children from schools in Dorset have been named "Fairy Penguin Guardians" after lessons about the species.

Before they could be named guardians, children had to decorate nest boxes with facts they learned about the penguins habitats.

Weymouth Sealife Centre went into each school to teach them about their 'little blue' penguins, which are the smallest species in the world.

The schools that took part were:

  • Damers First School
  • Sunninghill Prep
  • Broadmayne School
  • Chickerell Academy

William from Form 3 at Sunninghill Prep School said "It was really cool as we had to split into two teams and create our own designs. We came up with different ideas and I really enjoyed it."

What are Fairy Penguins?

Here's a video from September about the penguins.

The nest boxes were given to Weymouth Sealife earlier this year by Wareham Men's Shed, an charity for men that focuses on making projects to improve men's mental health. .

Chris Hockley, founding member of the Wareham Men's Shed, said: "We are so happy to have been asked to create something that will be seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors, for years to come."

The boxes create an enviroment that increases the chances of the penguins mating and having baby chicks.
