Rewards for businesses which boost community

Published at 3:17pm 19th February 2019.

A new scheme in Weymouth could help you chase your dreams.

Weyforward wants to launch a Basic Income Grant to help people set up businesses that will benefit the community.

They'll pay out £100 to develop an idea. If that goes well, they could get up to £500 per month to fund the idea.

They're trying to raise £60,000 to get the idea off the ground.

Jason West, a member of Weyforward, said: "There are fears that if you pay everyone £500 a month, yes it would be great but would it be something that would be too expensive?

"The interesting thing was to see if at some point it would break even and in our model it does after five years."

Jason also admitted that this project has been a long time in the making, and that he is hoping for support from the local community.

He added: "We've been going since 2013 and slowly building a network of local people who are into positive change. We've been working on this for quite some time.

"We've given projects support and used our own time and a bit of our own money.

"So now we're going to the community to say 'can you give us some seed funding?'. And then we've got these projects and lots of others that we need to give a little bit of help to financially to get them going."
