Work on steps down to Castle Cove Beach due to start today

It's hoped they'll be finished by Easter.

After 5 years of hard work, work is due to start today (4 March) on rebuilding steps back down to Castle Cove Beach in Weymouth.

In 2013, the original steps were damaged by a landslip, making access to the beach difficult.

Now the Friends of Castle Cove Beach Charity say "it's all systems go" for work to build new steps. They reached their fundraising target and the work, due to start today is set to be finished by Easter.

Dee Bird, Vice Chair of the Charity She said: "This part of the coast moves around quite a bit"

"Our design had to take that into account."

The new steps are mounted on metal poles in the side of the hill so they can be dismantled and rebuilt easily.

Charity Treasurer, Val Graves said: "A lot of people haven't been able to go down because it's been a slippery slope. And actually it's formally closed off, but everybody's still been using it.

"So now we'll be able to use it properly and everybody will be able to go down."

Access to the footpath from Old Castle Road will be closed for safety this month and for part of April.

They're also organising an event for the 23rd March called "Steps to Heaven" to celebrate.

The grand opening is expected to take place on the 20th April.
