New help for diabetics in Dorset

Diabetes insulin-syringe

Published at 11:34am 11th March 2019. (Updated at 11:35am 11th March 2019)

A blood monitoring system which could help diabetics check and manage their condition could soon be made more widely available in Dorset.

The Freestyle Libre device has been used by children in the county since October last year and a limited number of adults, but from April is expected to be made more widely available on prescription.

The county council’s health scrutiny committee heard on Thursday that although neighbouring health authorities have widespread use of the devices Dorset has lagged behind because of what was seen as a lack of clinical trial data.

New national guidance is expected to be issued about the use of the devices this week.
