West Bay Holiday Park are asking permission to put up 'Safari Tents' for luxury camping.

West Bay Holiday Park is asking to redevelop its site to introduce luxury camping – otherwise known as glamping.

Parkdean Resorts wants to use its existing touring field to provide 21 glamping pitches keeping the existing access of site roads in place.

It says it is making the changes to meet market demand: “It is necessary to develop the business in line with market demand and keep up with the current holidaying trends in the South West.

The current demand being an increase in the frequency of short breaks in the UK taken throughout the year, as opposed to a couple of week-long holidays a year. Also the new trend towards ‘glamping’ which will be in the form of safari tents offering accommodation and facilities more luxurious than those associated with traditional camping.

“The glamping pitches are to be safari tents which provide a modest tented structure on a timber base. Facilities include a double and a single bed, small kitchenette, dining and lounge area, outdoor seating with decked area and shared shower and toilet facilities close by,” said a statement from the company’s advisors ARA Architecture.

Each of the safari tents will occupy a 10×10 metre pitch, allowing space for a car to be parked next to each tent.

The application, to the Dorset Council, is open for comment until May 24. The reference number is WD/D/19/000716 with the details available on the council’s website.
