Weymouth Beach has scooped two awards for 2019.

It has received Blue Flag status and the Seaside Award, putting it among the top beaches in the country.

The awards - presented by the charity Keep Britain Tidy - recognise the work of the town council, as well as the community, in meeting the highest environmental and water quality standards.

Weymouth Town Clerk, Jane Biscombe said: "Once again, by gaining these awards, Weymouth Beach is shown to be among the best in the country.

"Over a million visitors return to Weymouth every year to enjoy our coastline and the Town Council is committed to making sure that this continues for many years to come.

"The beach is also an important part of Weymouth resident's lives for leisure, rest and recreation, and it's wonderful to work in an area where the residents are as passionate as we are. I am especially thankful to our dedicated beach management team and partners who work together to ensure Weymouth beach is a safe and enjoyable place to be, along with the invaluable input from the community in caring for our very special and unique environment."

Weymouth Beach at its best

Weymouth Town Council works with various partners including local businesses, RNLI lifeguards and Dorset Waste Partnership in order to maintain high standards.

Keep Britain Tidy's Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: "The success of the 156 beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches - from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses.

"When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country."
