A bonfire on Portland got out of control yesterday (15 May) and spread to a shipping container.

Crews from Portland, Weymouth and Poole were called to Tods Defence Limited on the Tradecroft Industrial Estate.

Nearby residents were told to keep their windows shut due to the smoke.

The shipping container was destroyed in the blaze.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to Tradecroft on Portland at 1.02pm for a bonfire which had got out of control and set light to an adjacent skip and its contents.

"We have a crew from Portland and one from Weymouth in attendance... A manitou forklift is also in use to help empty the skip of approx. two tonnes of waste."
