Borough Gardens is hosting the wellbeing event.

Dorchester’s Borough Gardens is hosting a free health-boosting community picnic today (11am-3pm).

The event is suitable for people of all ages and will showcase a range of local opportunities and activities that can improve our fitness and wellbeing.

These include:

  • woodland craft
  • face painting
  • cooking with the Friendly Food Club
  • yoga
  • Zumba
  • Nature-based mindfulness
  • high intensity interval training
  • Nordic Walking
  • table tennis
  • off-road mobility scooters
  • guided walks
  • health MOT with LiveWell Dorset

Matt from LiveWell Dorset said: “As well as discussing how healthy your lifestyle is, we'll check your blood pressure, body fat percentage, weight, BMI and lung age.

“LiveWell Dorset is a free service provided by your council. We'll guide you to a healthier lifestyle through free advice and coaching. If you want to become more active, lose weight, quit smoking or drink less alcohol, talk to us.”

The aim of the event is to bring people together outdoors and highlight the importance of being in nature in improving our wellbeing.

The picnic is taking place as part of the ‘Naturally Healthy Month’, coordinated by the Dorset Local Nature Partnership. During the month there are a range of activities taking place, as part of the Natural Choices and Stepping into Nature programmes, across Dorset, aimed at helping us to get the most out of the county’s countryside and parks.

Julie Hammon, who works for Stepping into Nature, a local project which connects people with nature, says “Picnic in the Park is a great chance to get outside and find out what’s out there to help explore wellbeing outside, breathe in the fresh air and meet like-minded, friendly people. This is a very inclusive, dementia friendly event – so come and see how we can help.”

Maria Clarke, Local Nature Partnership Manager added: “Being out in nature has been proven to be a key part of our wellbeing. Spending just 20 minutes in a park can boost your mental health and wellbeing by making you happier. One study also showed that those exercising outdoors did so for 30mins more than those at a gym. So join as at the Picnic in the Park and find out about opportunities to get out in nature.”

You can bring your own picnic or enjoy refreshments in the park.

The event is doing its bit to reduce waste too - by asking people to cut out as much single use plastic for the day as they can. Organisers are asking us to bring our sandwiches in a lunchbox – and learn more about how Dorchester is working toward going plastic free from Litter Free Dorset who will also have a stall there.

There will also be live music on the bandstand and a ‘Sing and Stroll’ session.

The picnic is being organised by Natural Choices, Stepping into Nature, Active Dorset, the Mid-Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group, Public Health Dorset, and Dorchester Town Council.
