Fundraising appeal to be launched.

A world famous paddle steamer that regularly visits Weymouth needs our help.

The Waverley has been coming to Dorset for the last 45 years.

The company which owns her, Waverley Excursions Ltd have withdrawn her from service for the first time in nearly half a century.

It's because her boilers need replacing.

Paul Semple is the General Manager of Waverley Excursions. He told Wessex FM there's been a big response from the public; "We have had a lot of supportive comments, people getting in touch and wanting t make donations. We are currently trying to scope the works to see how much it will cost, then after that we will launch our appeal."

Annie Anderson from Dorchester got in contact with Wessex FM when she heard about the plight of the Waverley. She told us she has fond memories of going on the paddle steamer with her late father; "My dad was a massive steam fanatic all his life, bless his heart. I remember going down below and seeing how the engines work. People sit out on the deck. Its just an amazing atmosphere. She's juts a very big part of our heritage and it would be nice to keep her going."

'How you can help'

The Waverley is owned by a Registered Charity which will shortly be launching an appeal to 'Save the Waverley' and ensure that she sails in 2020.

They say; "We are truly sorry for the disappointment and inconvenience caused by withdrawing Waverley from service.

"Donations can be made now by visiting or by texting STEAM followed by your chosen amount £10 or £20 to 70085.

"Once again, we sincerely apologise for having to withdraw Waverley for the 2019 season. We thoroughly appreciate the support and donations received to date. "
