What's next for former Dorchester post office?

Plans revealed for the Maud Road building.

A former post office on Maud Road, Dorchester may be converted to living accommodation – part of the property above and to the rear of it.

The Victoria Park Post Office has been empty for almost two years. It closed partially because the shop area was too small to meet modern Post Office standards with the business now moved 50 yards up the road to be part of a small supermarket.

Dorchester town council planning committee decided on Monday that they had no objection to the change of use. Its recommendation will now go to Dorset Council which will have the final say on the application.

Cllr Molly Rennie said that the application was made just before a change in planning law which had now come into force to make it easier to convert buildings between specified uses. She said she believed that the owners, if the application failed, might simply be allowed to make the change under the new rules without the need to ask permission.

Public comments on the proposal remain open until June 9th.
