Plans to abandon new community hall for Poundbury

Residents don't think its needed.

The need for a 300-seat community hall is expected to be formally removed from the agreement for the Duchy’s Poundbury estate in Dorchester.

Residents said the hall was not required during a consultation exercise last year and were worried about finding the volunteers to run it. Some feared it would also compete with the Brownsword Hall.

A 150-seat hall is available at Damers School and another of 180-seat in the adjoining Dorchester Community Church.

Also likely to be scrapped from the formal developer’s agreement is a ball wall, which has never been built, as part of the developers contribution to community facilities.

Dorset Council planners are being asked to agree the amendments when they meet on June 18th. The northern area planning committee will be told that a multi-use games area has already been provide on the Great Field in lieu of the ball wall.

The contribution which would have been made for the community hall will be used instead to provide a play area with at play equipment on the Great Field – concentrating all the items in one area, instead of spreading them out across Poundbury on small play areas, as was originally proposed.
