Rail commuters travelling from Weymouth to London Waterloo today are in for a difficult journey.

Today sees the start of four days of strike action by members of the RMT Union on South Western Railway.

Just over half of the normal services will be running.

The strikes are due to a dispute over the role of guards on trains.

A statement from South Western Railway says:

"The RMT has always said it wanted us to keep the guard on every train which is what we have offered as part of a framework agreement. We want to move the conversation on to how we operate our new trains and take advantage of the new technology on board to benefit our customers. We remain committed to finding a solution that will help us build a better railway for everyone.

"During strike action, while services are likely be busier than usual, we will do everything we can to keep customers moving."

There will be strikes on the following days:

  • Friday 30th August
  • Saturday 31st August
  • Sunday 1st September
  • Monday 2nd September
