One lane of the A35 is being closed at night to allow work to take place to remove overhead electricity cables.

  • Night closures between 20:00 and 06:00 on A35 near Winterbourne Abbas
  • Work started on Monday 30 September and will last for up to eight weeks

It's part of National Grid's Visual Impact Improvement (VIP) project to remove 8.8km of overhead electricity transmission line from Dorset's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The project will see 22 pylons removed between Winterbourne Abbas and Friar Waddon.

The works aim to transform views from the Hardy Monument and South Dorset Ridgeway, enhancing the area's natural beauty.

A spokesperson for National Grid said:

"Due to the importance of the A35 to local people, businesses and tourists, works will continue throughout the night to keep traffic flowing during the day and at no point will the road be fully closed."

The works are needed to create a new site entrance from the A35 west of Winterbourne Abbas and to install a box culvert adjacent to the roadway.

This will ensure that the River Winterbourne remains unaffected by the ongoing works and will not cause flooding in the local area.

'How will the closure work?'

Between the hours of 8pm and 6am one lane of the A35 will remain closed to traffic to allow for a safe distance to be maintained between workers and the live traffic lane, which will be under two-way traffic light control.

Noise and vibration levels will be monitored to ensure the impact on surrounding residents remains as low as possible.
