Care leavers could be offered the chance of an apprenticeship with Dorset Council.

The authority is working on a scheme where each department offers a post to at least one person leaving the care of the local authority, each year.

Research has shown that for many young people who have been in care can have additional problems in finding work and in often need places where they can have additional supported.

Chair of the council’s corporate parenting board Councillor Toni Coombs said:

"There are so many things that we can offer. It would be a big success if we could lead by example."

The idea also has the backing of interim executive director of children’s services, Theresa Leavy. She said:

"We want all our care leavers to be in education, training or employment and some of them may have had troubles which makes it difficult for them.

"If we are able to offer those opportunities, we should…we are one of the biggest employers in the county and we should lead by example."

Some council departments have already been offering those in care the chance of work experience.
