Marie Curie nurses provide vital support over Christmas

Published by Maria Greenwood at 8:36am 27th December 2019.

It's thought around one million people in the UK are caring for someone with a terminal illness this Christmas.

It could be their last time together.

We've been speaking to Marie Curie, a charity that's there to help.

Their nurses across Dorset have been working through the Christmas holidays, providing vital support.

Marie Curie Hospice

Kelly Henshall-Lewandowski is a Senior Healthcare Assistant and has been working for Marie Curie for over eight years.

She said:

"Christmas is obviously, normally a family time and normally a very joyous occasion but for many of our families this could very well be the last time they get to spend the holidays with the loved ones."

The charity offer care for patients and emotional support for their families too.

"Just knowing they've got somebody they can talk to or somebody they can lean on or go to for advice and take the pressure off of them so they can spend quality time with their loved ones, rather than caring time."

Kelly works in the multi-visit day service and visits patients homes.

She said:

"It's very rewarding to know that we can give someone support during that very difficult time.

"It's a privilege to be able to share that journey with them because coming into the world is a very important journey but as is the other end of the spectrum.

"So to be part of that is an honor."

'How can you help?'

The charity are looking for volunteers who can help with fundraising, particularly in the Weymouth area.

They're looking for people who can help pick up their collection tins from pubs, shops and cafés.

Anyone interested in volunteering should email: steph.bennett@mariecurie.org.uk
