Local man crowdfunding to give more people chance to fly

Nick Barnes wants other people with a passion for flying to have the same chance as him.

He started out at just 14 at the Dorset Gliding Club near Wareham.

Nick said:

"I fly power as well as gliders and motor gliders. I am also an instructor and speak to lots of people who would love to try flying but cannot because of the cost.

"I really want to encourage those that are passionate about flying and would love to take their passion further, but due to their current circumstances, cannot.

"I plan to raise money so I can pay for a lesson or experience for them. Then, if they enjoy it and are enthused by the experience, I can then help them take it further, either as a sport/leisure activity or as a career."

Dorset Council has agreed, in principle, to donate 50% of the money if Nick can raise the first 25%.

Once the initiative's set up, Nick will be offering those that apply for the funding the opportunity to try any of the following:

  • fly from Bournemouth International Airport
  • experience night flying
  • Instrument flying as well as gliding and motor gliding.
  • There will also be visits planned to a commercial flight training centre at Bournemouth airport to help those wishing to make it a career.
