FREE watercress offered at Dorset County Hospital

For patients at Dorset County Hospital, the road back to health is paved with free watercress.

The Watercress Company have installed a fridge full of the leafy green superfood in Damers Restaurant to encourage more people to eat healthy.

During the winter, watercress grows more slowly and the large leaf size means it isn't suitable for retail.

Tom Amery, Managing Director of The Watercress Company said:

"What we're hoping to do is to utilise that watercress because it's absolutely loaded with vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants and those products can be used to create a soup that is perfect for patients looking to recover.

"Watercress is great for wellness, particularly if you're recovering from treatment or going through treatment watercress is a great product to have."

'Creating the best soup'

Tom says they've got big plans for their watercress this winter.

"We're looking to develop a soup recipe that is the best soup, possibly, for the NHS."

For the past 6 months, they've been working alongside the team at DCH to make a soup for patients who are recovering from or going through treatment.

They're unveiling the soup on February 4th at the hospital's educational centre, teaching people about the health benefits of eating watercress, and they'll even be giving people a taste!
