New Community Hub opens today in Bridport

Age UK Dorchester are opening a new dementia friendly community hub in Bridport today.

The charity have created the facility to help reduce social isolation in the area. 

Local people are being invited to try a free taster session at The Community Room in St Swithins Road.

There's a chance to meet the team and give the new facilities a try for free.

Town Councillor, Barry Irvine and the Town crier, John Collingwood will be attending today's official opening.

77-year-old Ray Trout is a regular client at Age UK's Rowan Cottage Day services in Dorchester.

He said:

"The day centre has a very friendly group of people, we are made to feel very welcome and are always included and feel part of everything that they do.

"We particularly enjoy the exercise sessions in the mornings.

"The activities are stimulating for the mind which helps with remembering. Lunches are home cooked and very enjoyable.

"I highly recommend the services that Age UK Dorchester provide, as they are a real lifeline for many people just like me."

Age UK will be offering a range of activities that focus on reducing social isolation, preventing falls and improving overall health and wellbeing.

Sarah from Age UK says Bridport has a large elderly population:

"They are isolated in their own homes and there isn't the facilities for them to come out and enjoy activities, meet other people and also access home cook food.

"It's a dementia friendly service and we make sure that the environments inviting and we're able to support the people with dementia and their carers. 

"We give them access to advocacy support, we can provide wheel surgeries.

"We also have a footcare services that people can access and have their toe nails cut and they can also come along and enjoy our melodies and memories which is our singing class and music class for people with dementia."

The hub will be open every Tuesday from 9am - 4.30pm and will include activities, drinks, biscuits and a two course freshly prepared cooked lunch.
