Police prevent damage to badger sett in Weymouth

Dorset Police and the RSPCA were called to reports of a badget sett being disturbed in Weyouth.

A large active sett was found and authorities were able to stop any damage to the sett.

It's a criminal offence to disturb setts.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said:

"We would like to remind you at this time that under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 you could be sent to prison for up to six months and get an unlimited fine. 

"Please take appropriate measures when undergoing building work."

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: 

"Badgers and their setts are protected by law. It is an offence to destroy or damage a badger sett, except under licence from Natural England.

"Further advice about badgers and information about the laws that protect them can be found via the RSPCA's 'Badgers and the law' webpage."
