Travel company with Dorset stores make hundred of redundancies

It is unknown if the Weymouth and Dorchester stores will be affected.

Hays travel company have had to make nearly 400 of their staff members redundant due to the results of the recent pandemic.

The travel company have stores all over Dorset including in Weymouth, Dorchester and Bridport. 

A spokesperson from Hays Travel says: 

"Hays Travel is doing everything in its power to safeguard the employment of its experienced staff. Regrettably it has begun statutory redundancy consultation for 372 colleagues who were part of its award-winning Travel Academy, as a result of the devastating impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on the travel industry."

John and Irene Hays say: 

"We are deeply saddened to have to be taking this action. We were on the right trajectory until just a couple of weeks ago, but we have had to act quickly to protect the business for the future, and to ensure we will be in a position to come back to strength when this passes."

Back in November the company bought the entire retail portfolio of former travel agency Thomas Cook after it went in to liquidation and filed for bankruptcy. 

Hays travel offered 2330 contracts to ex Thomas Cook employees and took on 555 of their branches.
