Weldmar Hospicecare are launching a fundraising appeal for support during the pandemic.

The Dorset charity is facing a loss of £300,000 per month following the closure of their 26 retail sites.

The hospice needs to raise £18,000 per day in order to keep services running.

They have also had to cancel their fundraising events until the end of May, in line with directives from the Prime Minister.

New fundraising event KAPOW!, scheduled for early May at Lodmoor Country Park in Weymouth, has been cancelled, as well as the Craft For Care Week and a number of Open Garden events.

The Jurassic Coast Challenge walks have been postponed until September.

Fundraising Manager for Weldmar Hospicecare said:

"We are very lucky to have great support from our community.

"We've been running as a charity for 26 years and it's our community really that's kept us running for this long.

"Our nurses are on the frontline, they're caring for those very people who are most at risk and most vulnerable.

"But we are going to have to change how we provide our care."

At the moment, their Inpatient Unit is still open but they've had to put restrictions on the number of relatives visiting because of the outbreak.

Matt said:

"The important thing for us is, when we make those decisions to change how we provide that care, we want those decisions to be based on what is right for the patient, not how much we can afford."

How can I help?

There are a number of ways to help out.

Weldmar have put some suggestions on their website about how you can fundraise and socially distance

They include:

  • Set up a JustGiving page detailing your challenge details. Regularly update your page with pictures and status distance updates. Share your JustGiving page on social media channels
  • Social media channels are more important than ever for reaching out while you are socially isolating.
  • Host a Netflix party. Netflix has a new feature that allows you to host long distance movie nights and TV watch parties. It synchronizes video playback and creates a group chat so you can still crack out the popcorn and have that movie marathon with your friends without any of you leaving your sofa. Ask people to donate to take part and set some challenges like film marathons

They are asking anyone who is able to support now in the future to go to their website.

They are encouraging us that even if we don't feel able to give right now, we can still pledge to give money in the future.
