Wey Valley Academy's had a change of leadership, despite most children being home because of the coronavirus lockdown.

The school's announced former headteacher Mrs Bell has resigned from her post.

New head, Mr Rob Russell starts his new role today.

In letter to parents, Mr Russell said:

"With the country in a state of lockdown this is not going to be the easiest of times to be joining a new school as its Principal. It will be more difficult and take more time than usual for me to meet the staff and students and of course you the parents and carers so please be patient.

"I will arrange an opportunity to meet with you when it is appropriate and safe to do so."

Mr Russell was until recently Vice Principal of All Saints Academy in Weymouth.

He said:

"I am a local man, born, raised and educated in Weymouth before leaving for university in London and then starting my career teaching PE, Philosophy and Ethics that eventually brought me back to my hometown where I now live with my wife and two grown up children.

"Over the past 20 years I have been involved in the senior leadership of five very different secondary schools and have gained a wealth of experience from each one that I believe will enable me to support the rapid improvement of Wey Valley Academy."

Wey Valley School was rated 'inadequate' by Ofsted before becoming an academy.

Ambitions Academy took over the school before it could be placed into special measure, legally making it a new school.

That means it will be inspected again in three years.
