You don't have to be in the retail, hospitality or the leisure sector to apply for a cash lifeline from the government.

Dorset Chamber are concerned businesses could be missing out on thousands of pounds of support through coronavirus because they do not realise they are eligible for a Small Business Grant

It says that some firms mistakenly believe that the government cash boosts are only for the retail, hospital and leisure sectors.

But companies with a rateable value of under £15,000 that receive some form of rate relief can claim £10,000 from the Small Business Grant Fund whatever sector they are in.

There are two types of grant available for businesses:

  • Small Business Grant Fund - available for all businesses who already pay little or no business rates because of Small business Rate Relief, Rural Rate Relief and tapered relief
  • Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund - available for businesses in these sectors

Many don't realise this, according to Dorset Chamber who support businesses, and is urging them to seize whatever help they can get.

Chief Executive, Ian Girling said:

"This money could make the difference between survival and failure for some businesses.

"The local authorities are doing a great job at administering the grants and making it as easy as possible yet some firms are not aware of the schemes or are not applying.

"It may be because they are not tuned in to social media or think that they don't qualify, but the support is there and I would encourage all businesses to seize every penny they are entitled to."

Dorset Council

Dorset Council say as of yesterday, payments were made to 5,127 business out of the 7,200 that have applied since 1st  April (67 per cent). This totals £61.32m.
