£10,000 grants to help Dorset dairy farmers

Dorset's Dairy Farmers may qualify for a £10,000 grant to help them overcome the impact of coronavirus.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began they've seen a decrease in demand for their products, as the hospitality industry has been forced to close.

Dairy farming is the biggest farming sector in the UK and it's hoped the new funding will help support farmers who are producing over 40 million litres of milk every day.

It aims to help farmers who have lost over 25% of their income over April and May.

West Dorset MP Chris Loder has been lobbying to help local farmers since the outbreak began, he says:

''This dairy support fund has been the result of weeks of hard lobbying with the government.

"It's taken longer than I'd like, but it will now help farmers who need the help most".

Since bars, pubs and cafes have shut, farmers have been facing financial difficulty and producing excess milk.

The government has also announced a £1 million campaign to increase dairy sales and help the farmers use their excess milk.
