Dorchester's annual Thomas Hardy Victorian Fair has been postponed until June 2021.

It will now take place on Sunday 6th June, 2021, from 11am to 6pm on High West Street and High East Street, to celebrate Thomas Hardy's Birthday.

Chair of the Thomas Hardy Victorian Fair Committee, Councillor Gareth Jones said:

"Having lived through several pandemics, including cholera, typhus and tuberculosis, Thomas Hardy himself would have understood that his birthday celebrations needed to be postponed.

"We are incredibly grateful for the support of all our sponsors, partners and community participants. We look forward to working with them in 2021.

"However, though we are unable to celebrate Thomas Hardy's 180th Birthday this, we shall we producing a birthday party video to mark this special occasion on 2nd June."

The event only started last year, and attracted 5,000 people.

The organisers say they are aware that the focus needs to be on public health and safety, to ensure that we beat Coronavirus.

They felt moving the event to next year would be sensible to avoid large gatherings of people.
