Dorset and Wiltshire firefighters called to 18 fires in the open in one day.

One of the incidents included a bonfire in Littlemoor that was left while still burning, unattended.

Another included a  large fire in the open in the grounds of Atlantic House on Portland.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said:

"Today (Monday 25th May) has a been an incredibly busy day for us. Along with our ongoing incident at Wareham Forest we have attended a further 18 calls to fires in the open.

"Please stop having BBQs and fires in the open and consider the consequences of your actions."

It comes as firefighters are still damping down from a blaze that affected 220 hectares of forest and heath in Wareham last week.

150 firefighters were on scene at the peak of the blaze.

The cause of the blaze is believed to have been 'social activity' after barbecues, campfires and bottles were found in the area.

There is currently an AMBER Wildfire alert in place and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service are urging us not to use barbecues in forest and heathland.
