Armed Forces Day celebrations in Weymouth cancelled, but we can still mark the event

Weymouth's annual Armed Forces Day celebrations have been cancelled this weekend because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Over the last 25 years the popular event has attracted more than 40,000 visitors to the town.

This weekend historic military vehicles were due to line the Pavilion Forecourt and Sunday was due to see the Armed Forces Service at the Cenotaph, followed by a parade.

Instead, the Mayor of Weymouth will be delivering a personal message to veterans and the local community via social media.

Cllr Graham Winter, Mayor of Weymouth Town Council, said:

"I am hugely disappointed that we are unable to hold this year's Armed Forces Day celebrations.

"The event creates a wonderful atmosphere and the community love playing host to many visitors including veterans, armed forces personnel, family, and friends.

"The parade on Weymouth seafront is indeed one the town's proudest moments and a stunning spectacle for all involved.

"We look forward to hosting a magnificent Armed Forces Day event in 2021 and welcoming back our many visitors who love Weymouth."

Weymouth Town Council will be flying the Armed Forces Day flag outside the Council Offices on Monday 22 June, the day which the annual flag raising ceremony would have taken place.

Armed Forces Day is a national event celebrated annually in late June to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. This year's Armed Forces Day is on Saturday 27th June.

We are being asked to still show support from our homes to pay tribute to the British Armed Forces for their hard work, dedication and efforts to keep us safe.

To find out how to get involved, please visit the official Armed Forces Day website.

Weymouth's Armed Forces Day 2021 celebrations will take place from Saturday 19th to Monday 21st June.
