Dorset libraries launch 'order and collect' service

Published by Maria Greenwood at 10:46am 9th July 2020.

Following the Government’s recent announcement, libraries managed by Dorset Council have started a phased a re-opening.

Focusing on the safety of the customers and library staff, existing users will be able to order their preferred books and items at an allocated time.

The only library that won't be able to offer the service is Beaminster, due to the lay out of the building.
Books can be ordered online by filling out a short form about reading preferences and those without internet access can phone in.

Councillor Tony Alford is the Customer, Community and Regulatory Services portfolio holder he said:

"During lockdown, our library teams worked hard to minimise the disruption to customers by offering a range of fun and informative services via the internet.

"We saw a tremendous increase in new online subscribers during lockdown. However, I know many people missed the human interaction a visit to the library can give."

There will be a bag of 10 books and other items such as talking books of DVD's waiting for collection, based on the type of books people normally select for themselves.

All ages can access the service and items can be borrowed for up to four weeks.

The collection and returns process will be contactless and pre-arranged times slots mean the number of people visiting can be managed.

Cllr Alford added:

"Although libraries are going to look and feel very different as they re-open with limited services on offer, I am sure customers will be pleased to physically access their local library again and have a much-needed refresh of their reading material.

"The library teams are excited about returning to some normality too, although things will obviously be very different for a while!"

Any current loans due back during lockdown, have been extended to August and overdue charges that may have occurred during lockdown have been waived.

Activities and events such as rhyme time and reading groups will continue to be internet based for the time being.

All e-books, publications, including magazines and newspapers will also continue to be available online.
