Volunteers to clean up seven Dorset beaches in seven days

A group of volunteers are doing seven beach cleans, on seven Dorset beaches, in seven days.

Starting on Monday 20th July, the volunteers from Dorset will be raising money to support Clean Jurassic Coast.
It's being organised by Rhea Soulsby-Phillips who, back in June, spent an evening cleaning up Durdle Door's beach with her husband Dave Phillips.

Rhea said she was shocked by what she found,

"We went to clean the beach on a Tuesday evening and naively thought it would be quiet, I did not mentally prepare myself for the hell and devastation the beach is having to endure every single day.

"There was rubbish everywhere. It was soul destroying. A small group of volunteers picked up tampons, sanitary towels, human excrement, wee in bottles, tents, chairs, probably a million fag butts, bottle tops, broken glass, KFC bags full of chicken bones, pants, socks, sandals, the list goes on.

"I cleaned this beach once, and I was emotionally and physically destroyed. There are lots of incredible organisations, charities and volunteer networks who pick up other people's litter every day, I am so in awe of them. So, humbled by their strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. They need us."

Clean Jurassic Coast is a volunteer network that works with the Jurassic Coast Trust, Dorset Council's Litter Free Coast and Sea.

Their motto is 'strength in numbers' and their mission is to keep the 95 miles of Jurassic Coast litter free.

Rhea continued:

"They need our help and are in desperate need of safety equipment, even more during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Hand sanitation gel, litter grabbers, bags, gloves, first aid kit are just some of the things they need, they also need financial backing to help works towards the bigger issues, which is lack of education.

"We're asking for a donation to towards the beach clean or if people can't donate then why not offer their time at a beach clean."
