Dorset MP Calls on Government to Save Portland's Coastguard Chopper after Purbeck Isle Tragedy

Published at 8:09am 22nd May 2012. (Updated at 8:36am 22nd May 2012)

South Dorset MP Richard Drax has written to the Transport Secretary, urging her to save Portland's Coastguard Helicopter after the Purbeck Isle tragedy.

The wreckage of the fishing boat was found off Portland on Saturday 19th May after it went missing 2 days earlier.

Portland's rescue chopper was involved in the mass search for the boat and its crew.

The body of its skipper, 34-year-old David McFarlane, has been recovered.

Searches for crew members Robert Prowse and Jack Craig have been called off.

As it stands a decision to restructure the service by the Government means the chopper will have to go in 2017.

Speaking to Wessex FM Richard Drax MP says it's vital the chopper stays operational.

The South Dorset MP says he's written to Transport Secretary Justine Greening, briefing her on what happened and has invited her and her team to come to the coast.
