Weymouth Decked Out With New Chairs

500 deckchairs all designed by local people will be lining Weymouth Esplanade this summer.

More than 400 residents took part in the Olympic Deckchairs project where artists held workshops at Weymouth College.

Thousands of images were narrowed down to 500 designs, printed in different colours based on the Jurassic Coast, seaside activities and the town's Georgian seafront.

Lyn Kirkland, 51, from Portland said: "I was really excited about being involved in the project. I am thrilled that my work will be available for people to see and enjoy along the seafront and will be part of the Olympic legacy. I can't wait to show my family and friends my designs."

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Management Committee Chairman Cllr Michael Goodman said: "This project was a fantastic opportunity for local community groups, schools and individuals to create a piece of public art that will be a legacy from the Games this summer.

"Each design celebrates Weymouth and will transform the seafront. The deckchairs are something that everyone can enjoy and I would like to thank all the local people who took part in the project for coming up with such innovative ideas and designs."

Phil Gibby, Arts Council England's Director for the South West, said: "Thousands of people who come to Weymouth and Portland this summer will enjoy seeing and using these deckchairs. This project gave people in Weymouth and Portland the opportunity to work with artists to create something fun and special. I'm sure that those people will feel vey proud when they can see how their work is appreciated by local people and visitors to the area. We want everyone to be able to enjoy cultural experiences, and this project has drawn in many people who might not otherwise take part in the arts."

The deckchairs will be launched as an exhibition on Friday 29 June at the Weymouth Pavilion end of Weymouth Beach. Members of the public will be able to come and view the deckchairs from 3pm to 8pm.

From Saturday 30 June and over the summer period, depending on the weather, the deckchairs will be available to sit on along Weymouth Esplanade from 10am to 5pm. Each costs £2 a day to hire.
