Former England Cricket Captain Mike Gatting is on Weymouth Beach this week to encourage us to try our hand at the sport.

Visitors to the Sports Arena on Weymouth Beach were bowled over to get top tips from England cricket legend Mike Gatting on Tuesday and Wednesday (7 and 8 August).

The former England captain was on hand at the sports arena to provide tips and guidance to visitors as they tested their batting and bowling skills.

The free-of-charge Sports Arena offers people of all ages the chance to have a go at a variety of sports including football, sailing and kayaking in addition to cricket and much more.

It has proved extremely popular with visitors to Weymouth and has so far attracted an average of 5,000 people each day.

He said: “This is my first trip to Weymouth and I’m very impressed with the beach and the town. The Sports Arena is magnificent and it is clear it is giving a lot of pleasure to kids and their mums and dads.

“This is exactly the type of initiative we need to re-ignite the urge to take up sport – both amongst young people and those who are older.”

Derek Steels from Peterborough is a regular visitor to Weymouth with his family. He said: “We come on holiday to Weymouth every year. The Sports Arena gives the kids an opportunity to have a go at sports they wouldn’t normally try. It was a bonus that Mike Gatting was here today.”

The free to enter Sports Arena on Weymouth Beach is open from 10am to 6pm each day until 12 August 2012.
