Penny Is Charity Shop Prize Winner

When Weymouth resident Penny Ovenden was visiting Weldmar’s St Thomas Street Charity Shop recently to donate some items she noticed the Weekly Prize Draw poster advertising the new single play tickets. Imagine her surprise when the ticket she bought won the £1,000 first prize.
Weldmar’s Weekly Prize Draw has always been available to players who pay via an annual, six-monthly or monthly payment, but Weldmar now sells single play tickets for £1 in all of its 17 charity shops, at Joseph Weld Hospice, at Trimar Day Hospice and in other locations.
Penny said “I often visit this shop and the other town centre Weldmar shop where my sister-in-law works, as I want to help support the work Weldmar does in the community. My husband was cared for by the Weldmar Community Specialist Nurses two years ago. It was only with their help, in conjunction with the District Nurses, which allowed us, as a family, to enable my husband to die at home as he had wished. Although it was a very hard and sad time, they helped it to be a positive experience”.
The winning Weekly Prize Draw ticket was the first ticket that Penny had ever bought – and it has also been the biggest win that she has ever had.
Penny has chosen to donate part of her winnings back to Weldmar so that the Trust can continue caring for and supporting those in south, west and north Dorset when they need the vital services offered by the Trust.
Caroline Nickinson, Director of Fundraising, said “We are so glad that we were able to support Mr and Mrs Ovenden in their time of need – and incredibly grateful for Mrs Ovenden’s continued support”.
The Weekly Prize Draw is operated to benefit both Weldmar Hospicecare Trust and St Margaret’s Hospice in Somerset with tickets monies going to the hospice in the county in which the tickets are sold. Each week there is a £1,000 first prize, a £500 second prize, a £250 third prize and 25 prizes of £10. All the prizes are guaranteed to be won each week, excluding the £250 third prize which, if not won, is rolled over to the next week to a maximum of £10,000, when it’s a guaranteed win. Currently, the third prize stands at £3,250.
