Councillors Vote Against Building Houses On Stadium Site
9:14am 22nd November 2012
Councillors have voted unanimously AGAINST plans to build houses near Weymouth's Football ground.
Wessex LLP - who own the land surrounding the Bob Lucas - announced 2 days ago (Tuesday 20th Nov) they wanted to relocate the stadium to Lodmoor Park, to make way for 200 new builds.
Chickerell Town Council says they won't allow the ground to be used for anything but leisure. Members unanimously voted against plans for any residential development around or on the stadium site.
Speaking to Wessex FM local councillor Ian Gardener says the site has always been used for leisure and it would be unfair to deprive the local communities of that space and that a site nearby has been earmarked for a potential new skate park: "Unanimously everyone voted against it, nobody wants to lose that site it's not appropriate for housing and has no cohesion with Chickerell".
Ground owners Wessex Delivery LLP says the alternative site at Lodmoor would allow them to build a new, modern football facility for Weymouth Football club, which could also be used by the wider community.
