Dorset Village Libraries Being Handed Over To Volunteers
12:05am 30th December 2012
The final countdown to the transfer of community run libraries in South Dorset is underway.
7 libraries will be taken over by volunteers in the New Year.
It follows months of preparation and negotiation between Dorset County Council and local community groups. But final arrangements for the official handover have now been made.
Puddletown is leading the way and volunteers will get the keys to the library on January 7th.
Chickrell will follow suit later in the month on the 22nd.
The libraries will be independent and self-governed, but supported with books, staffing and IT services from the Council in a deal worth 5 and a half thousand pounds per library a year,
Burton Bradstock and Charmouth Libraries have already taken over their leases of their buildings, and the transfer of the full service will take place in January and February.
