Weymouth Teenager Joins Budget Demo at Westminster!
6:37pm 19th March 2013
A 19-year-old teenager from Dorset will be demonstrating in London ahead of the government's budget announcement today (Tuesday 19th March).
Kristie Thacker, from Weymouth, will be dressing as Chancellor George Osborne as part of Oxfam's IF campaign, which asks world leaders to tackle the root causes of hunger, including international aid and tax.
Kristie said: "It is a scandal that 50% of the global population go hungry every day. We cannot take aid away from them and I don't know how we can sleep at night if we don't meet that commitment."
Joining over 500 supporters, all dressed in suits and George Osborne head masks, Ms Thacker hoped their demonstrations would remind the chancellor to keep his promise of spending 0.7% of the budget on foreign aid.
"There is enough food for everyone but only if we commit to 0.7% in aid and we make sure that rich companies pay their fair share of money in tax rather than dodging tax in the UK and overseas," said Ms Thacker.
"I would like to see MPs keep their promises in the year of the G8 and also on the eve of an important budget. I am looking forward to the event and although I have to get up extra early to travel to London on the day, it will be worth it," she added.
