Bridport Has A Solar Dome

Groves Dome

2:09pm 22nd May 2013

Groves Nurseries in Bridport have teamed up with Dorset Butterfly Conservation to create an exhibit explaining to customers how to make their gardens attractive to beneficial insects; particularly butterflies and bees.

The newly opened exhibit, housed in Groves' unique solar dome, not only has loads of information provided by Butterfly Conservation but  is also full of nectar rich plants that pollinators such as butterflies and bees will love.
The West Dorset based nursery has done a lot of contract growing for Dorset Butterfly Conservation in the past, growing wild thyme Thymus serphyllum and common dog violet Viola riviana, both of which are highly attractive to endangered butterfly species such as the "Large Blue" butterfly.

Managing Director Charlie Groves said, "We use the solar dome to exhibit our National Collection of violets in winter and early spring, but as they stop flowering from March onwards we have to find another use for it.  There has been a lot of interest surrounding the plight of pollinating insects lately and we thought this would be a great way to provide people with the information and plants they need to be able to make a difference in their own garden."

Chief executive of Butterfly Conservation Dr Martin Warren said, "Gardens are crucial havens for butterflies and everyone can help by planting a wide range of nectar sources and some caterpillar food-plants. Butterflies have been described as flying flowers and they can add a beautiful new dimension to your garden."

"It is great to be able to have our "Gardening for Butterflies" display at Groves Nurseries. We hope that by filling the Solar dome with butterfly-friendly plants we can inspire a whole town of gardeners to make a positive difference for butterflies in their own gardens."

The exhibit is free to visit and is open during the usual garden centre opening times.
