Dorchester and Bridport Women In Queens Birthday Honours

10:10am 15th June 2013

A committed volunteer from Dorchester is being given the honarary British Empire Medal for her services to local community.

For over 26 years Susan Blake has been serving Dorchester especially with local rambling groups.

Since 1987 the 74 year old has been the walks leader for the Casterbridge Ramblers, and secretary since 2008.

Susan was also one of the founding members of the Dorchester Strollers, a volunteer group who work with older members of the community to help them maintain good health and meet up socially.

BEM award is part of the Queen's birthday honors list but has only been back in action for the last year as there were no recipients for 20 years until the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

She told Wessex FM the three things she is most proud of are "the establishment of the Dorset Jubilee trail from 1999, the strollers with our ten birthday coming up on the 10th of July, and the Wessex Wander which unites the four areas of the wanderers - Avon Somerset Dorset and Wiltshire."

Bridport musician P J Harvey's been given an MBE. She's the only artist to win the Mercury Music Prize twice, most recently in 2011.
