Dorset Green MEP Launches European Mobility Week

European Mobility Week aims to raise awarenss of the importance of using public transport, walking and cycling to travel. Dr Scott Cato, who is deeply committed to this cause, focused on increasing the use of sustainable transport through fiscal incentives at the annual campaign. She also argued that many EU member states are still supporting commuting by car through their tax subsidies. A particular scheme supported by the Green MEP is Bike2Work, which promotes healthier lifestyles and attempts to make cycling to work more cost-effective. Dr Scott Cato said: "Studies repeatedly show that employees who cycle to work are happier and healthier, experience less absence from work due to sickness and are less susceptible to delays caused by congestion." Launch of the event comes as the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs suggests that 23,500 deaths a year are a result of air pollution. Moreover a report by sustainable transport group Transport & Environment reveals that 90% of new diesel cars exceed EU pollution limits. Dr Scott Cato concluded: "The powerful motoring and aviation lobbies have led us down a path of high carbon emissions, air pollution and congestion. "It is high time we reclaimed our air, our health and our climate through a massive shift to sustainable modes of transport."
