Under the direction of Sir Ben Ainslie Team USA's Oracle has claimed victory in one of professional sailings most thrilling finales.
The Americas Cup pitted Ainslie’s Oracle team against the sturdy might of New Zealand in the waters of San Francisco Bay. Racing on high speed, giant catamarans with huge sails, both sides darted across the inshore setting in a series of match races.
The Olympic champ was drafted in from the warm-up team after Team USA slipped to 8-1 deficit early on during the series that was watched by thousands in the bay and millions across the world on YouTube.
From there, master tactician Ainslie engineered what will be known as the most exhilarating and hard fought comebacks in Americas Cup history. Breaking new ground in innovation and speed the newly modified Oracle boat tore through the waters and claimed victory in 8 straight match races, to the shock of New Zealand who battled to keep the pace.
Snapping a 9-8 victory from the jaws of defeat Sir Ben lifted the Auld Mug for the first time, albeit as part of an American team, and fulfilled a lifetime ambition showing the world why he's one of the most successful sailors of all time.
