One of the country's top Triathlon events is making the transition to Weymouth.
The Challenge UK event - formerly held at Henley - draws the best competitive athletes and large crowds to the race course every year.
Details of Weymouth’s announcement were kept under wraps until this week.
Registration for the September race next year (14th) is now open for full and half triathlons entrants. Organisers say 900 people have already signed up for the event.
The race opens with a sea swim in Weymouth bay (3.8k), followed by the rolling bike course (180k) through the local countryside which organisers say offers competitors a "fast and smooth course, taking in the beautiful surrounding terrain." The run (42.2) that follows for the grand finale leads through the town.
Challenge UK Race Director, Alan Rose said,
"Weymouth is the perfect destination for Challenge UK, and we are really excited and proud to be able to make this announcement. The local area is quite simply, stunning and we cannot think of a better location."
"Challenge Weymouth will offer a competitive and fast course.
We will be hosting both long and half distance triathlon events, as well as a new Challenge kids event - there really is something for all the family."
Cllr Ian Bruce, Brief Holder for Tourism and Culture at Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, said,
"We are very pleased that Challenge UK have chosen Weymouth as the ideal venue for this prestigious event, and we look forward to working with organisers Just Racing UK."
Ian continues, “Weymouth has a great event and sporting heritage which has been enhanced by the triathlon events run by local organisations. The date of 14 September 2014 is perfect for our aim to extend our festivals and events season and will provide a boost to the local economy as well as a fantastic viewing opportunity for locals and visitors.
We look forward to working with our local triathlon and sporting clubs and putting the area on the global triathlon calendar."
Event sponsor USN, one of the UK’s leading sports nutrition brands, will be providing the extra edge to racers; their nutritional experts will be on site to provide support and advice to competitors, as well as having refuel stations at various spots around the course.
Karl Bickley, nutritional expert for USN, says fuelling your body correctly for such physically demanding events like Challenge UK is important;
“Your body needs to perform above and beyond its usual requirements and our USN stations will provide the perfect sustenance needed to solider on and get to the finish line."
