Winchester Wasps 104 - 74 Weymouth Bandits. Solent Men’s Division.

With the Bandits propping up the rest of the league and the Wasps riding high in 3rd, this fixture looked like it would be an easy win for the Winchester based team. To add further difficulty to the Bandits task ahead, they only travelled with 7 players.

Houlden and Legg both making their first appearances of the season for the Bandits got 4 points each in the first quarter. But the Wasps took early control of the game finishing the quarter off leading 31-19. The second quarter did not get much better for the Bandits, Sam Brown picking up his 3rd foul early in the 2nd quarter, which did not help as he could not play the rest of the quarter for fear of fouling out before the second half begun. Turner, Gilmartin, Sorrell, Legg all chipped in with 2 points apiece in the 2nd quarter, but the Bandits efforts could not match the relentless pressing game of the Wasps who finished the quarter even better 57-30 ahead at half time.

Weymouth adopted a small line-up in the 3rd quarter which paid off, Gilmartin top scoring in the quarter with 5 points, Canham,Turner and Legg all contributing with 4 points. Wasps had taken their foot of the gas and it showed in the final score of the 3rd quarter Bandits taking it 27-22. The 4th quarter was a scrappy affair with both teams have mini runs, Sam Brown finally fouling out, Sorrell was the highlight of the 4th quarter making it rain from the three point line with 3 made in the 4th and Winchester winning the game 104 - 74.

Player, Sam Brown “Bandits gave a good go at the 3rd place Wasp’s, but are lack of bench hampered are ability to play are own energetic game, sticking to a zone instead of man defense which made it easier for Winchester when they were in attack. Also my early foul trouble did not help as we only had 1 other forward in the team. Winchester’s ability to execute plays into points just shows why they are 3rd in the league.”

Game MVP: Craig Sorrell

Craig Sorrell 22, Max Gilmartin 12, Chris Canham 12, Kyle Houlden 10, Alex Legg 8, Sam Brown 8, Josh Turner 2.
