Work to serve up Dorchester's first grass tennis court for youngsters will start next month (April).

The Town Council is transforming the old bowls green in Borough Gardens into a pair of youth size grass courts that will also be used for badminton.

The decision to create the courts was made in an effort to stamp out anti-social behaviour after a number of incidents were reported there in recent months.

Steve Newman from Dorchester Town Council told us work to put down the chalk lines and youth sized tennis nets will start after Easter, and the grass courts will be free to play on too;

"It'll be free access and our local community coach will be using the area as well to help teach youngsters to play so they might take up the game in the future."

Steve says although the swish grass courts are designed for children adults will be able to play too;

"The main thing is we want the area to be used as much as possible, so what we're thinking of at the moment is to purchase tennis nets to they can be used for badminton play as well."

With work to transform the old bowls green right around the corner it's hoped the courts will be ready in time for Andy Murray's Wimbledon title defence at the end of June.

Although the courts are only being set-up for the summer, if they prove successful who knows what may happen ..... Strawberries and cream anyone?
