Weymouth Raiders basketball team are celebrating their latest victory, 75-72 over league leaders Hamble Hornet in Solent Mens Division 4.
Jake Kinder top scored with 21 points, MVP: Jay Wilson
Weymouth went into this week's game with not much in the way of confidence after a crushing defeat to the bottom of the league in the cup. This week's challengers came in the form of top of the league Hamble Hornets.
The game started very slowly with both teams missing easy layups. Then the game sparked into life with the hornets scoring two consecutive baskets without reply. Jake Kinder and Josh Turner responded, by scoring all the points in the first quarter to leave Weymouth down by two points 15-13.
Second-quarter started in a similar vein with hornets scoring two free throws out four. Before Weymouth started to play, and became more efficient on the offence. But Weymouth still wasn't playing help side defence. But with Jay Wilson and Alex Legg in free scoring mode they both hit three-pointers and with help from Turner and Kinder kept the scoreboard ticking over to finish the first half of the game 36-30.
Third-quarter Weymouth did quite well but the Hornets started to get their rhythm back. When Holden was called for a foul that wasn't this made Weymouth rally again and with Wilson, Kinder, Thompson and Turner all scoring in which was a very competitive quarter. With each team trailing off three-pointers against each other Weymouth edged quarter by 20 points to 18.
Fourth-quarter both teams were getting tired and more mistakes were being made by both teams. This made it more possible for fast breaks to happen with a loss of concentration in defence Hornets took full advantage of the very tired Weymouth defence. Alas this was not enough as Weymouth done enough in the first 3/4 to merit the victory 75-72.
The coach Josh Turner said after the game "I am over the moon to have gained such an important win. The lads played very well in tonight's game and I hope this is the catalyst for more victories for the remainder of the season."
