American Football Raptors Arrive in Dorchester

(Updated 5:27pm 22nd May 2014)

8:29am 21st May 2014

Dorset's newest American Football Team has moved to Dorchester.

The former Bridport Vikings, now the Jurassic Coast Raptors, have relocated to attract new players and cater for their existing squad.

They're working towards the South West Division 2 League and they're going from strength to strength with new players turning out to give the American game a try.

Bill Heinreich is the Defensive Co-ordinator and says American Football is hugely popular over here;

"Because the sports growing so dramatically it's becoming quite competitive, when I played there weren't many teams but now there are the University leagues and there's a massive crop of young players who're well coached who have come into the sport which makes it much more competitive."

So what kind of ability do you have to be to play?

"The great thing about the sport is it takes all shapes and sizes to play. You might be athletic, tall and quick, you might be aggressive you might be a heavier person ... There's a position for you in on the team!

Anybody's physical attributes can be used and useful to the team. It's the best team sport in my opinion and a really rewarding sport."

The Raptors are currently training at Poundbury Sports Field on Wednesday nights from 7 o'clock.
