Swim Across Weymouth Bay

Dorset Festival Of Sport 2014 Weymouth

Published at 9:23am 19th July 2014. (Updated at 8:17am 22nd July 2014)

They'll be a race to the finish across Weymouth Bay this weekend.

Organisers of the Ecover Blue Mile are staging an open water sea swim for the first time.

It's one of several competitive water sport events that will be taking place today and tomorrow.

Laura Joint is one of the organisers.  She says they're expecting lots of people to take part in their free taster sessions.

"Research is suggesting that if you're by the sea or in the sea it has great impact for your physical and mental health.  And the younger you get connected to the sea, the more likely you are to keep going back to the sea.  The whole idea is to get as many people and as young as possible engaged with the marine environment and water sports, and lets get them hooked."

The Ecover Blue Mile team chose Weymouth to host the event for the first time last year.

Laura tells us why:

"We'd been holding the Ecover Blue Mile in Plymouth for a number of years.  But Weymouth is just an absolutely fantastic setting. The conditions are really perfect for racing but also for taster sessions."
