Wey Valley School student Libys McGuiness is travelling back to Ireland after competing there at international level.

A student from Weymouth will be back in Ireland to compete at international level in Taekwondo.

Libys McGuinness from Wey Valley School travelled to the International Poomsae Championships in June, and came eighth in her division.

Libys said the competition was "outstanding" and added: "Whilst in Ireland I also had the privilege of training with twice world champion grand master Shin, Master Derek Somner, which was an unforgettable experience."

The school supported Libys by providing her with a sports scholarship grant to cover the cost of accommodation and entrance fees to the tournament.

Phil Thomas, Principal at Wey Valley School, said: "Libys has really made the most of her sports scholarship. She works hard at her sport attending lunchtime and after school martial art sessions with the lead tutor Rob MacDonald and as part of these sessions, Libys has coached some of our younger students. Libys is a great ambassador for the school and for the sports and was awarded the Martial Arts student of the year at last month's Sports Presentation evening.

"She is a credit to the school as she has not only engaged with sporting opportunities but also initiated charity work and sought to protect and encourage other young people. The confidence she has demonstrated in her sporting achievements is now reflected in all aspects of her life."
